San Francisco Bay Area branding and design firm, Project6 Design, is pleased to announce that their user interface and design work for 511.org has entered a public beta testing phase. The focus of the design changes for the Metropolitan Transportation Commission's website were intended to make some of the site?s most popular features (congestion map, trip planner, accident alerts, roadway construction announcements, etc.) easier to find and simpler to use.
Project6 Design led MTC and SAIC through an extensive process that started with wireframes outlining every feature of the revised site. Special planning was taken to make the user experience the same if the user was interacting with the map or with the text-based side of the page, especially for the trip planning functions. A large additional effort was to redesign the base map. The map uses several different zoom levels; so all features (text, regions, colors, borders, etc.) need to be identified at each level. The base map design had to be clear enough by itself, but also allow for trip route lines, traffic condition colors, and multiple icons on the screen at the same time. Project6 designed all of the new icons: from highway shields to incident icons to work in a cohesive way with the new user interface.
The new version of the traffic page is currently in beta but can be found at http://trafficbeta.511.org.
